(c. 1412 - May 30, 1431)
Joan of Arc claimed she was commanded by the voices of saints to aid the French Dauphin, Charles, against the English in the Hundred Years War. She raised the siege of Orleans, which turned the tide of war for the French. She was captured in 1430 and eventually put on trial by an ecclesiastic court for witchcraft and heresy. She was burned at the stake in Rouen. Her achievements led to an awakening of French national consciousness.
